Drifting Along

“People do not drift toward holiness. Apart from grace-driven effort, people do not gravitate toward godliness, prayer, obedience to Scripture, faith, and delight in the Lord. We drift toward compromise and call it tolerance; we drift toward disobedience and call it freedom; we drift toward superstition and call it faith. We cherish the indiscipline of lost self-control and call it relaxation; we slouch toward prayerlessness and delude ourselves into thinking we have escaped legalism; we slide toward godlessness and convince ourselves we have been liberated.” -D.A. Carson

I read this quote and thought about being in a raft or canoe on the water. To get anywhere you would like to go on the water you have to put forth some effort and energy . . . you have to row! If you choose to relax, be lazy and not do anything, you are at the mercy of the water and the current. You are just drifting! Without any spiritual effort on our part and not practicing the spiritual disciplines, spiritually speaking you will not get anywhere. You will find yourself going nowhere and way off course to where you want to go. You will just be drifting!
